Walter M. Weiss

geboren 1961 in Wien, studierte Geschichte, Publizistik, Politikwissenschaft und arbeitete zunächst zehn Jahre lang als Chefredakteur mehrerer namhafter Zeitschriften. Parallel dazu ausgedehnte Reisen in alle Welt, insbesondere nach Nordafrika, in den Nahen und Mittleren Osten. Publizistische Tätigkeit – als freier Autor u.a. für Die Zeit, Geo, Merian, Weltwoche, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Der Standard, Die Presse, Diners Club Magazin und diverse Reisezeitschriften ...
Seit Anfang der Neunzigerjahre vorwiegend Buchautor (und Fotograf) mit den Themenschwerpunkten „Österreichische/Europäische Kulturgeschichte“, „(Süd)Ostasien“ und, im Besonderen, die „Islamische Welt“. Inzwischen hat er für renommierte Verlage wie MairDuMont, Theiss/wbg, Emons, Stürtz, Bruckmann, Orac, Picus, Christian Brandstätter u.a.m. in Summe bereits mehr als 100 Sach- und Reisebücher verfasst und teilweise auch fotografiert. Außerdem konzipiert und ediert er Kataloge für internationale Großausstellungen, u.a. bisher für die Erfolgsschau „Tutanchamun – Sein Grab und die Schätze“ oder, aus Anlass von 100 Jahre Walt Disney Company, für die Welttournee von „Disney 100. The Exhibition“.
Seit 2009 zusätzlich regelmäßige Tätigkeit als Studienreiseleiter vor allem für die Veranstalter „Zeit Reisen“ und „Windrose“ v.a. in Iran, Georgien, Jordanien, Oman, Usbekistan, aber auch nach Marokko und entlang der Seidenstraße.

born 1961 in Vienna, Austria, read history, journalism and political science at Vienna university. Editor-in-Chief of several publications, he has travelled extensively worldwide, especially in North Africa, as well as the Middle East. He has been a freelance author (and photographer) full-time since the early nineties, specialising in the subject of Islamic countries, Central European arts and culture and, more recently, in South- and East Asia. His work has been published among others by GEO, Die Zeit, Merian, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and Weltwoche. Amongst the more than 100 books, he has published in English so far, are Crash Course Islam, Der Basar / The bazaar, books about Austria, Egypt, Morocco, United Arab Emirates and Oman resp. about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as well as, in German, books on Bhutan, Burma, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Iran, Irak, the Gulf States, Georgia, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Slowenia, Czech Republic, Syria, Jordan, Vienna, Venice, Prague, Salzburg, Marrakesh, Beijing, Shanghai and many others. Walter also works as photographer and concept developer. Among the catalogs he has created are those for the globally successful exhibition “Tutankhamun – His Tomb and His Treasures” as well as - on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney Company – for the World Tour of “Disney 100. The Exhibition”.
Since 2009 he is also regularly accompanying select tourist groups as a lecturer through Iran, Georgia, Jordan, Oman, Uzbekistan, Morocco and along the Silk Road.
He lives in Vienna.
